Tor Bay - Canso

Distance: 29nm

Time: 10am - 17:30

Motoring: 5.5hrs

We were excited to leave as the wind were predicted to be in the 15 knot range with following seas. When we left, we were on a close reach and tacked a few times to get out of the cove. Once out in open water, the winds dropped to 6 knots and on a close haul point of sail and were doing 2 to 3 knots and at times were being pushed back. Started the engine and unbelievably we motored the 5.5hrs to Canso.

Midway through our journey, we heard a strange noise coming from under the hull. A grinding noise but it wasn't consistent. And it made that noise at varying rpms. As we got closer to Canso, the grinding noise became more persistent. We dropped our speed (rpm) for the balance of the trip. As we approached Canso we were faced with the worst onslaught of lobster traps to date. It was so bad we had to turn around and find another way in. Adding to the stress was the consistent grinding noise. Almost free of the minefield, we snagged a line. Quickly we shut the engine down and hoved-to (mainsail was still up). Christine got the boat hook and brought the line up. As we drifted backwards we could see that if we brought the line forward and placed over the port bow we could be free of it. It worked and we were off again.

Arrived in Canso to find another sail boat anchored. We drove around looking for a spot and finally accepted that there were no shallow spots to be had and dropped anchor in 45ft and let out a whopping 300ft of chain.

Tomorrow we work on finding out what's going on with the propeller/shaft. It is a wrapped line, zinc anode, the cutlass bearing, the transmission or ?

Too bad Christine isnt feeling very well with her cold as the events of the day deserve a proper attitude adjustment (cocktail) or 2.
